‘Time outdoors creates happy memories’ says UK’s largest leisure vehicle show

Being outside creates the happiest memories, according to the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show 2018. Research reveals that many UK holidaymakers’ fondest childhood recollections involve spending time in the great outdoors.

A survey of previous event attendees by the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show 2018 revealed the fondest memory of growing up was ‘going to the beach’, followed by camping and leisure vehicle holidays giving them their happiest times as children. Other precious experiences include bike rides, days out with the family, camping in the garden, climbing trees and making a fire.

With 86% of Britons taking a holiday each year according to ABTA^, further research by The Camping and Caravanning Club among both campers and non-campers+ found that 94% of holidaymakers believe younger generations would be happier if they spent more time outside. Of those adults surveyed, 41% feel they were happier as youngsters than children today.

Over 90% of UK campers believe the younger generation would be happier if they spent more time outdoors and less time on smartphones, games consoles, computers and tablets. 97% of campers are certain that camping generates warm memories and nearly half of non-campers agree that nights under canvas make people feel more positive. Camping in the countryside makes children particularly happy say 87% of youngsters who camp, and 73% of adults say camping is something every child should experience. A significant 59% of campers claim camping should be on the national curriculum.+

Female adventurer Anna McNuff, who appears at the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show 2018 alongside a host of famous faces and industry experts, is an avid advocate of spending time outdoors to improve happiness, stating: “Heading off on camping trips is my favourite way to explore the local landscapes, at home or abroad. It’s a really low-cost way to travel, and having the flexibility to just ‘pitch up’ almost anywhere brings a wonderful sense of freedom. Nights by the campfire, good food, good friends, long walks and bike rides – these are some of my happiest memories from years gone by.”

Taking place between 20 and 25 February at Birmingham’s NEC, the show features the latest in leisure vehicles, camping, caravan holiday homes and lodges, as well as must-have accessories.
